"That Guy"

"That Guy"
24" x 30"
oil on canvas
Amber L Bailey

I had an exciting break from painting women! There are some really great things going on in this paint and the subject was fun. His expression is intriguing and when I first started laying out his face, I actually laughed out loud - in a good way. I was reading an artist's statement recently, of a local painter I admire (Tony Wood). He was saying how there is a symbiotic relationship between the artist and his/her subject. I found the idea interesting ... and true. I find that every painting I do has its highs and lows... and I react accordingly to what "happens" on the canvas. This time...it was a funny reaction...and I think this is a really fun piece. The more I paint, the more I discover what my paintings are about. Some of them are more like little narratives - that's how I'll label this one. Others represent more abstract ideas. I have painted portraits but I wouldn't say the majority of my paintings are portraits. I paint people, sensuality, sexuality, emotion and objectification in the same way that a landscape artist paints valleys and plains. On the fun side of things, yes, I'm drawn to the contrast of a bright red lip against a blue background, the color fuchsia and fashion magazines - but there is a theme and voice to my work. Hmmm...

Here is my second square for the RAM Art Gallery. I must say I am totally thrilled with it! Hopefully it's dry in the morning so I can turn it into RAM for show/sale. (on Saturday, May 7th, 2011)

Dotty Joe

"Dotty Joe"
10" x 10"
Acrylic on canvas
Amber L. Bailey

I did this piece rather quickly. I decided to work in acrylics tonight, I normally stick to oils. This piece, I call "Dotty Joe" was more of an exercise in pattern and composition. I didn't concern myself too much with accuracy. It's a fun piece...

Orange You?

SOLD
"Orange You?"
11" x 14"
Oil on Canvas
Amber L. Bailey

I am very happy with the way these oranges turned out. Oh, and the title...I think it came to me because the orange wedge is supporting the orange slice, it would fall otherwise...so I titled this piece "Orange You?" as in orange you glad I'm here? haha. It's bright and fun. I'm happy with it.

Jocelin

"Jocelin"
24" x 36"
Oil on canvas

This is the third and possibly the last stage I'm going to paint on this piece. I had fun tonight and it went rather smoothly. I added finishing pops of red here and there...and I like the results. And as usual, I can't get a descent picture with my camera. One of these days I'll have to take all of my work outside for some better pics during the day.

Wet on Wet Still Life Painting

Today turned out to be a great painting day. I was at the grocery store and got really excited by all the fun colors in the produce section. I decided to go with the big red tomato and bright yellow pepper. I love these! I bought the polka dot fabric place mat at the dollar store the other day. I had fun painting these though I had a couple moments of doubt that they'd turn out the way I wanted. I am happy with how they turned out. This painting was a great practice piece in wet on wet painting. I wanted to finish them in one session and I did. I started out by priming the canvas with a neon green acrylic paint. I thought it would be a fun color to peek through where I let it. Oh, and I took an extra picture to give a better idea of how the painting turned out. I don't know what's up with my camera...or maybe it's operator error. Can't wait to see what I paint next! :)

Still Life with Red

Ok...I'm a little frustrated with my camera and I'm not a technical person, so this is about the best picture I can get. I may work on this painting more, but this is what I have so far. As you can see, the paint is still very wet which is causing light to reflect from it. There are some aspects of this painting that I like - such as the spoon. It turned out better than I thought initially.
